Nehemiah Asa Hunt papers, undated and 1899.

Writings and letters of a Congregational minister who, in addition to religion, was interested in the establishment of socialist communities. The microfilm reproduces a brief biographical sketch of Hunt; his comments (ca. 1899?) on the Old Testament books of Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Daniel, Esther, and Jonah; two versions of "The Salvation of the Nation" (ca. 1899?), in which Hunt discusses his plan for the creation and development of socialist colonies and his belief that the principles on which they would operate were compatible with the teachings of Jesus; a letter (May 1899) from Hunt to his daughter Ella; and an unidentified letter fragment (ca. 1899?), also written by Hunt.

Hunt was born in Mason, New Hampshire on September 7, 1811. He studied at Oberlin College (1833-1837), graduated from Lane Theological Seminary (1841), and was ordained a Congregational minister (1846). He came to Minnesota (1863) from Illinois and settled in Sterling Township, Blue Earth County. He held pastorates at Sterling and Vernon Center (1864-1877). He later resided in Northfield, Minn. and for a time in California (late 1890s). Hunt died at Cloquet, Minn. on March 30, 1900. ...
